This is taken from the north end of high Street, at the intersection with Colombo Street and Hereford Street (the intersection at the bottom of Cathedral Square was always known as 'the bottleneck'), looking south, possibly from the United Services Hotel. On the left is the Fisher Building. The date is probably late 1952 or 1953 as the newest vehicle visible is one of the Christchurch Transports Board's AEC Mk IV buses which were new in 1952.

The dark coloured taxi closest is a 1951 Ford (they were known as 'twin spinners'), and immediately behind it looks to be a 1938 Dodge. The closest car going away is a 1946-48 Chrysler product, probably a Plymouth, and in front of it is an E series Vauxhall, a model first seen in 1952. In the background are several Hillman Minxes and Morris MO series Oxfords.
