the Danzig Krantor (crane gate)

This icon of Danzig (Gdansk) dates back to 1444 in its present form.  It was destroyed, like most of Danzig, in 1945 and was rebuilt in the late 1950s by the Poles. Since 1962 it has formed part of the city's maritime museum. The wooden stem in the central block of the gate above the harborside Torpassage is designed as a double lift over six floors.
