steam power in Wairakei

There's no need to heat water to produce steam to power turbines here - nature does it already.  Writes Geoff Churchman who took this pic: "driving through this field is a rather surreal experience - clouds of steam surround the pipes and other installations. No locomotion, but a impressive display of steam power." Three electric power stations use the geothermal field - Wairakei from 1958 (now being phased out, no pun intended), Te Mihi being built now and Poihipi from 1996.
