Steven Joyce labelled the Minister of Tar

The text of a press statement from the Opposition Transport Spokesman is below.  It follows the release by Mr Joyce of a Green Paper in which he proposes to spend $26 billion on his pet road projects over the next 10 years.  On TV One this morning an aspiring Government lackey said this was necessary as cars are the reality of how people travel now.  It's a bit like saying that because alcoholics are addicted to alcohol we should give them more alcohol.

National's 'master of tar' Steven Joyce remains totally preoccupied with building roads, says Labour's Transport spokesperson Shane Jones.
"His announcement today that he intends to build even more new state highways shows how bankrupt his vision has become," Shane Jones said.
"It's almost as if he's driving his transport juggernaut down both sides of the road at once.
"New Zealand needs an integrated transport policy that makes best use of state highways, public transport, rail and shipping, but Steven Joyce can't get his head around more than one part of the equation.
"It is significant that his announcement today foreshadows reduced spending for public transport infrastructure," Shane Jones said.
"That's a real slap in the face for Auckland in particular. Auckland desperately needs investment in public transport infrastructure to get the city and its economy moving, but Steven Joyce is refusing to enter a meaningful dialogue with the country's largest city.
"Labour's record for improving our state highway system was second to none --- in fact, Mr Joyce has been up and down the country taking credit for work Labour initiated --- but Labour also knew and knows that New Zealand's transport policy and infrastructure must cater for a wide variety of needs in different parts of the country.
"The master of tar has his wheels stuck in the very stuff that he believes is New Zealand's only economic salvation," Shane Jones said.
